Achilles Tendonitis

Iontophoresis Protocol Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon may be disrupted in response to one of three stressors; tension, compression orabrasion secondary to friction. The Achilles tendon, comprised of the gastrocnemius, soleus and plantaris tendons, becomes inflamed at its insertion to the middle part of the posterior surface of the calcaneus.

Sports or activities that cause a forceful muscle contraction against a great resistance can cause tendon strain. This occurs when the ankle joint is in dorsiflexion and the Achilles is stretched, a forceful knee extension or plantar Flexion can cause Achilles tendonitis.

Runners most frequently have Achilles tendonitis involvement. Usually the onset is insidious with the sensation of adull ache in the tendon after running. If the athlete continues the sport, pain will be present on the initiation of running and become increasingly painful with sprinting. Eventually the runner will feel pain while walking and be unable to run. Other sports that cause overuse injuries leading to Achilles tendonitis are dancing and jumping.
